Stawr | I don't want to use regular sunscreen, because I don't want to be subjected to the chemicals in them like 1,3-butadiene, Nitrosamines(aka DEA or TEA,) octinoxate, oxybenzone etc. BUT I also don't like getting sunburned. I have no idea what sunscreen to buy at the store. I'm ready to just make my own. What do you use as sunscreen? |
Ellynlvx | Aloe Vera. |

Really?! If that works, that would be fantastic. I've been experiencing the same dilemma with sunscreen this year (normally I don't pay much attention to it, but I'm sick of the hormonal hyperpigmentation I have along my jaw, which gets worse when I'm in the sun). I also don't like it when my back and shoulders look a bit like leather. So...does aloe prevent sunburn, or just treat it? Time to get another plant (RIP, little aloe plant). |
Violets | Also, I've seen some recipes for homemade sunscreen, Stawr. I think you have to order Zinc Oxide online or at Whole Foods or something like that, and mix it with a few basic ingredients. I haven't tried to make any yet, so I'm not sure whether or not it comes out white or anything. Here's one link: http://wellnessmama.com/2558/homemade-sunscreen/ |
Stawr | I actually have used just aloe a few times and it worked fine. Un informed trashy people like my boyfriends aunt, might call you "stupid" for it, and it's up to you if you want to shrug them off, or school them. But hopefully you don't know people like that! Plus I have olive sin(medium fair.) So I don't burn easy, but I can burn. Yeah it seems like every recipe has zinc oxide in it. I really don't feel like buying any at the moment, but probably will eventually. I think I'll try making a mixture of the things I do have and see how it goes this weekend. Cool Violets! I like how her blog shows the spf level in everything! With what I got I can make one that is spf 13-17. Sounds good enough to me. |
Stawr | I just used that recipe w/ what I have. Can't wait to use it! I washed out an old container that held raw honey. Recipe filled up more than half the container. I even added my aloe vera into it. That didn't mix well since I put in after everything melted and took it out of pan. Oh well. |
Yin | Zinc oxide reflects the sunlight. You need it for a good sunscreen. I never read anywhere that it's toxic either. |
Randall | Someone should invent all natural sunscreen. |
Randall | The key would be if it's edible and still effective. |
Randall | Bet it would make a lot of money. |
Stawr | I hear the best natural sunscreen is badger. My sunscreen did pretty well, except on my nose, everything else got tanner, I was at the beach too! My sunscreen isn't water proof.
So I would like to eventually buy the other things to go in sunscreen to make it stronger. Or just buy "Badger" |
